5. Ricky Steamboat On Sidekicks

Running for one season from 1986 to 1987, Sidekicks was a vehicle for Filipino-American child actor Ernie Reyes Jr. The final heir of a distinguished line of karate masters, he's sent to live with an Italian-American cop. They fight crime! Well, sometimes. Obviously the adoptive father, Sgt. Jake Rizzo, always does. Sometimes Ernie (yes, he pulled a Tony Danza) helps him, and other times he deals with actual kid problems. In this episode they've arranged for Ernie's nine-year-old cousin Primo to come and live with them. Thanks to a wacky sitcom miscommunication, he turns out to be a childlike 29 year-old adult obsessed with cops and guns played by Ricky Steamboat. Somehow, it's decided that he should get a job working as a security guard/parking attendant for a "reformed" bookie. And Rizzo convinces him he's an actual police sergeant. Of course this leads to Primo discovering some crime and eventually ending up in an arena with a conveniently placed ring so he can dispose of bad guys with wrestling moves. Primo moves to Virginia to live with an FBI agent, it's implied he'll become an FBI agent himself if he gets citizenship, and...that's it? Let's review: A seemingly mentally challenged young man is sent to work among criminals while being lied to. After getting in trouble, he's sent to join the FBI because he can fight. Steamboat is pretty entertaining here, but what the hell is going on?
