10 Bizarre Wrestling Conventions We All Take For Granted
4. Assault Is Legal As Long As It Happens In A Wrestling Arena
One of the longest standing and most accepted methods of building heat in a rivalry is for one party to attack the other outside the confines of a match, often backstage and usually without warning. This is treated as a perfectly normal occupational hazard for the victim in question, and if any third party happens to be caught up in the fracas, that’s too bad for them.
If any of us decided to ambush those we don’t like, especially if they were one of our colleagues, we’d most likely end up in court facing an assault charge. Hitting them in the head with a steel chair would be particularly frowned upon.
You would be forgiven for thinking that wrestlers are only supposed to attack each other as part of the athletic contest that takes place within the squared circle. Therefore, logically, any physical violence that takes place outside of these confines is technically assault, but you very rarely see the law getting involved. Although it would damage a wrestler’s “tough guy” aura to summon the police.
