Both fighters entered this contest having lost their UFC debuts. With Struve a full foot taller than his Bosnian opponent there was an almost comical height differential that left you wondering how they were competing in the same weight class.

The first round saw Stojnic throw heavy shots to a grounded Struve who appeared a little too content to absorb them while he worked for submissions off of his back. Stojnic then landed what looked suspiciously close to an illegal downward elbow that opened up a giant gash across Struve’s hairline. The cageside doctor checked the wound and allowed the fight to continue despite Struve looking like he’d been attacked with a machete.

With the fight slipping away from him, Struve reversed Stojnic in the second round and easily took his back. Bleeding all over the mat and his opponent, the Dutchman fought relentlessly for a submission knowing the severity of the cut could lead to a doctor’s stoppage at any moment. Indeed, Joe Rogan inimitably pronounced at one point, “we’ve got to get this fight over before Struve bleeds to death!”

Seemingly exhausted from grappling in puddles of another man’s blood, Stojnic eventually tapped out to a choke to clinch an incredible comeback victory for Struve. A win for Struve’s never-say-die spirit, but a stomach-churning loss for viewers with a sensitive disposition.
