Following the success of the Cruiserweight Classic on the WWE Network this year, the WWE are expected to run a similar tournament next year consisting entirely of female wrestlers. It's already being reported that the company have approached numerous renowned women working on the independent scene, and there are also rumours that Io Shirai and Kairi Hojo of Stardom have been offered contracts in 2017.

Much like her fellow Japanese star Kota Ibushi was in the CWC, Io Shirai would likely enter the women's tournament as the out and out favourite given her status as perhaps the best female wrestler in the world today. She recently wowed Western audiences with her appearance in Lucha Underground as Hitokiri of the Black Lotus Triad against Pentagon Dark; with her insane dive from the top of the arena perhaps the best seen yet in The Temple.

If Shirai does make the switch to WWE for the tournament, I fully expect her to go all the way and win the whole thing. She's that good. And if Asuka is staying in NXT for a little while longer then the thought of her squaring off against her joshi peer during Summerslam weekend is surely too good an opportunity for WWE to pass up?
