Unlike most WWE pay-per-views, Battleground wouldn't open with a dramatic video package detailing the main matches. Instead, Vince McMahon appears with both Stephanie and Shane McMahon backstage. Flustered and in a panic, Vince demands that his children sort out what's happening, because his pay-per-view is in jeopardy of not having a main event.

As the camera cut away, Michael Cole would inform viewers that Roman Reigns may have pulled out of the Triple Threat main event later that night. As a result, the McMahon family are trying to find a suitable replacement. Throughout the night, several promos are filmed with other stars, ideally babyfaces.

Each time, these men are then found laid out in mysterious circumstances, meaning they're unable to enter the match. Right up until the actual bout itself, Reigns would be keeping everyone guessing. Meanwhile, a furious Dean Ambrose is on the hunt for Roman, desperately wanting his WWE Title belt back before the headline match.

At last, following all that drama, Reigns actually emerges for the bout, again through the live crowd but not engaging with anyone.
