Firstly: Rock vs. Austin at WrestleMania X-Seven is one of the all time great events. Two titans of the business capping off an incredible show in front of a red hot crowd. It has intensity, gravitas, big daft spots and some killer false finishes. There’s pretty much nothing not to like about the clash.

Well - there is something. If only Vince McMahon hadn’t meddled, this would have been perfection. The shocking swerve of Stone Cold siding with his mortal foe made sense - he was so desperate to win back the belt that he’d make a deal with the devil himself.

Still, it can’t help but ruin things. This should have been the industry’s two heavyweights going at it. It’s The Rock and Steve Austin - you really don’t need to embellish things any further. The word was that Stone Cold was growing stale, though, and a heel turn was just the thing to relight that fire.

He didn’t need it - Stone Cold going stale? A ridiculous notion - and the heel turn just didn’t take. While it’s churlish to complain about a match of this calibre, we wish it could have ended differently.
