10 Brilliant Wrestling Moments Clearly Inspired By Iconic Movies
2. Swamp Fight- Friday The 13th
When WWE tossed around adding a subtitle to their PPV events, Extreme Rules was soon dubbed 'The Horror Show At' Extreme Rules, which seemed fitting (albeit shoehorned) given Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman were set to battle in a Swamp Fight.
The rumor making rounds was that the Swamp Fight would be another cinematic match and pay homage to slasher flicks from decades past. If combined with an all-out brawl, the film references would have been more welcomed. Once it became clear that there would be minimal fighting in the Swamp Fight, fans were left to indulge in the match's drama and production. In a rare instance of continuity, WWE made many callbacks to the Wyatt Family and Mixed Match Challenge. But the match still lacked action and originality.
During the match, moments were borrowed from B-rated horror flicks, but none was no more obvious than the finish. From Strowman in the boat to 'The Fiend' emerging to drown 'The Monster Among Men,' WWE lifted heavily from Friday the 13th Part III. The Swamp Fight had all the ingredients to fall in line with the Boneyard Match from WrestleMania 36, but the bout proceeded at a slow (or was it methodical?) pace and played out like a playlist of Wyatt's favorite horror movie scenes.
