10 Brilliant Wrestling Moments Clearly Inspired By Iconic Movies
3. Black & White Sting; Joker Sting - The Crow; The Dark Knight
In the early days of WCW and beyond, Sting was a babyface surfer-type character. However, as the nWo took over WCW with incomparable force, 'The Icon' returned from Japan to confront the gang and its copycat Sting, as they destroyed the company he loved.
This time, he wasn't dressed in his usual flamboyant colors. Instead, Sting returned in black and white, strongly resembling Eric Draven from The Crow (a change suggested by Scott Hall, who famously ripped off Tony Montana from Scarface). And like Draven in The Crow, 'Stinger' was out for vengeance.
1990s professional wrestling was known for imitating Hollywood successes, and this version 'The Stinger' was no exception. While WCW may not have replicated an entire sequence from The Crow, Sting's new persona had all the film's dark and brooding trappings. And this wasn't 'The Icon's' only offense.
Weeks before winning the TNA World Heavyweight Championship from Mr. Anderson, Sting began displaying a more manic demeanor as well as a twist on his usual face paint. Rather quickly, it seemed that 'The Icon' had lost his mind and adopted a persona akin to Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight, including adding 'Insane' to his monicker and concocting a crazy cackle. When you don't know what to do for yourself, just do what someone else already did, apparently.
