"Our world is about to change. Blood runs cold."

For what felt like an eternity, WCW played promotional vignettes for a new martial-based character, chockful of nunchucks, karate chops, staff twirls, and just about anything else an elementary kid would have associated ninjas.

The ads played through the spring and summer of 1996, and long after the vignettes became a sort of inside joke amongst fans, the much-awaited hero arrived on WCW Pro.

What fans witnessed was not a mere homage to a famous film scene. It wasn't even a wrestler who borrowed a look or a couple of lines from a character. It was, albeit highly produced (around a half-million USD), a cheesy knockoff of Subzero from the hugely successful Mortal Kombat video games and film.

But the miss wasn't completely on WCW or Glacier.

AFX Studios owner Andre Freitas, the man who created the outfit and entrance for Glacier said “Ray could never live up to the hype of what we provided. Eventually, I came up with the idea for the lasers and the snowfall and all the show because I’m thinking like a special-effects movie guy. I’m not thinking like ‘Ray’s sort of a mid-card guy, and I’m giving him an Undertaker-type entrance.’ I had no concept of that. I didn’t know all the politics of wrestling. I’m thinking, I want to make my character as cool as possible.”

Shame on Freitas, but even more shame on WCW who didn't consider the half-million USD midcarder tab to be a bit strange.
