10 Brilliant Wrestling Moments Clearly Inspired By Iconic Movies
7. Robocop In WCW - Robocop
Not unlike their northern rivals, WCW saw popular 1990s action flicks as potential cash cows and were unafraid to milk them dry if for nothing more than a single rating spike. Whereas typically a promotion would have gone with a more candid celebrity appearance, WCW didn't go for an actor. They went for a character. And not just any character, but one of the most iconic ones from the 1980s and 90s violent action films.
To help push Capital Combat into the mainstream light and pick up a little cash on the side, WCW decided to team up with Robocop 2. On the posters leading up to the event, WCW advertised not only their event and the movie, but also an appearance from the bionic officer.
During the event, The Four Horsemen locked Sting inside of a shark cage, when ever so slowly the tinman dawdled down the ramp. Bending the steel bars as though they were rubber (or was it rubber bars as though they were steel?), Robocop freed 'The Stinger,' giving our hero the upper hand.
It was like a scene straight from the action flick itself, only much cheesier and even less logical. And while it might have been difficult not to cringe at the shameless cross-promotion, it was a wonder to witness legends such as Sting and Arn Anderson.
