10 Cancelled WWE Shows
7. Confidential
Shows aiming to unveil the real scandals and sensational stories of the 'fake' world of wrestling have existed since the 'sport' first cloistered itself within the hermetic chamber of kayfabe. But rarely has a wrestling company voluntarily turned the spotlight onto themselves.
WWE's eyes were blinded by their very own exposé show, Confidential, which threw any illusions out the window as it revealed the 'inside scoop' of backstage controversies doing the rounds. Hosted by the Big Cheese of of sleaze, Gene Okerlund, it was a fascinating, disarmingly honest concept, often on the nose to the point of being self- incriminating.
Take the episode which delved into the death of Miss Elizabeth. These days, a tragic end with such murky circumstances would be lucky to draw anything more than passing comment by the company, let alone a warts-n-all documentary investigating it with scant regard for the indirect culpability it inferred on themselves and the business.
Enthralling though it was, Confidential opened the eye just a bit too much to be comfortable. Possibly realising it was causing more damage to the brand than good, Vince McMahon closed the file after just two years.
