10 Changes To Fix WWE's Ratings Woes
10. Change The Dialogue
WWE has done a pretty effective job of making each one of their wrestlers seem approximately 30% less cool over the past few years. Besides wrestlers no longer being able to swear and say vengeful things, the company’s obsession with branding and buzzwords has grown to the point where it makes nearly every promo sound unnatural and quite lame.
For example, a wrestler can’t just say “SmackDown” they have to say “SmackDown Live!” why? Well, that's because someone off-camera will yell at them if they don’t use the exact correct phrasing. That’s the most recent example, but the history of everyone having to say “sports entertainer” over “wrestler” and “title” over “belt” is troublesome in that it makes everything feel static and sanitary. And then, there's wrestlers CONSTANTLY working in WWE Network plugs into their promos. There's no natural way to mention Swerved or Table for 3 into a normal conversation without sounding like an idiot, and yet the company has made their talent do so on many occasions.
Vince and Steph just need to lay off, and relax on the forced lingo so their wrestlers don't just seem like a bunch of corporate puppets.
This change alone won’t make much of a difference right away, but letting the talent have more control over what they’re saying, and letting them speak like actual humans will go a long way in making them feel relateable and interesting again.
