10 Changes To Fix WWE's Ratings Woes

5. Authority Takes A Break

There is no more deflating noise in all of professional wrestling than hearing Stephanie McMahon’s music starting off an episode of Raw. It just sets a tone of “been there, done that, I'm already bored” like nothing else. Now, there’s no way that she’s going to leave WWE for good and never come back, but her presence as a weekly character really, really needs to come to an end.

She’s been the face of Raw during most of the show’s steep decline in viewership. For that reason alone, she should step aside, but then there’s the fact that she makes every wrestler she’s in a backstage segment with feel less special. The way she talks down to them without getting any sort of comeuppance is incredibly frustrating to watch, and completely counter productive to any sort of narrative they're trying to build.

While new wrestlers may always come into WWE, they're still just a cog in the never-ending McMahon wheel. Her (and to a lesser extent Shane's) heavy involvement is really just about the worst thing for business.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
