10 Characters WWE Gave Up On Way Too Soon

5. Papa Shango

There isn't much Charles Wright didn't do during his WWE career. How many other wrestlers can claim they've been a Voodoo-practicing witch doctor, MMA fighter, black militant, and pimp during their run? None. That peculiar mix of gimmicks belongs to one man. It's just a shame all of those gimmicks failed apart from The Godfather.

Papa Shango, the witch doctor gimmick, lasted for around 18 months before being canned, but it was actually killed by creative direction long before then. When Shango debuted on TV in January 1992, he was legit creepy and along the same lines of other supernatural characters like The Undertaker. Straight away, Shango was given a push.

It wasn't to last. Right in the middle of a feud with The Ultimate Warrior, the babyface somehow forgot all about the magical menace and pursued Randy Savage instead. This did nothing to sell Shango as a threat. By the time he faced Bret Hart for the WWF title later in the year, it was too late.
