With Scott Hall on his way to WCW, Vince McMahon decided to have him lose his Intercontinental title to Goldust - you know, the ultimate embarrassment. But thanks to his hard partying lifestyle, Hall failed a pre-WrestleMania XII drug test, and had to be scrapped from the show. His replacement was Rowdy Roddy Piper, who’d had just enough of Goldust’s shiny gay antics, and was too darn straight to let them go unpunished.

So a ‘Hollywood Backlot Brawl’ was set up, with the majority of it being filmed in advance and played throughout WrestleMania XII. The brawl itself was a lot of fun, and sort of looked like the cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show wandered on the set of They Live. There were dustbins, baseball bats, catering tables and dumb car spots.

Then there was OJ Simpson’s car.

In order to make it seem like Piper was chasing after Goldust’s gold Cadillac, they intercut the show with footage of the OJ Simpson car chase – either because that was the only footage WWE could find of a Ford Bronco speeding down a freeway, or because they had decided it would be funny to reference a recent and high profile murder case during a feud between a man in a kilt and a sparkly weirdo.

The two returned to the arena to continue the match, with Piper picking up the win (although there was never actually a referee or a pinfall) after stripping Goldust down to his suspenders and stockings, and kissing him on the mouth.
