8. Taz And Sabu Never Touch
WWE.comSpeaking of sticking with angles........... They teamed together in early ECW days and after Sabu returned from a brief WCW run in 1995, and after Taz had healed from his serious neck injury, he began calling Sabu out and challenging him to a fight. The challenge was never accepted, and over the course of a year it went on and on and on, until eventually Sabu had had enough. But every time they would go to fight something would happen - the lights would go out or someone would attack them from behind. What this did was build anticipation amongst the fans for their match, which took place at the aforementioned Barely Legal in 1997. Paul Heyman had the nerve to stick with the angle and it paid dividends. But he did it in a way that although Sabu never answered the challenge he never came across as weak or afraid. Yes, there were plenty of smoke and mirrors but they served a purpose. Could this work today? Absolutely - especially if it build towards a match at WrestleMania. Two tag partners split and one tries to get revenge but he is always cut off at the pass until he eventually gets his revenge by winning the Royal Rumble and challenging his old partner (who in this scenario is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion) to a match at WrestleMania. The heat for the match would be great. But as with some of the other storylines, the WWE management would have to stick with it for the long term and not panic and change direction.
