3. Caesar & Cleopatra Discuss WrestleMania IX (Royal Rumble 1993)
WrestleMania IX has been ragged on without repent over the years, with many online citing it as possibly the worst 'Mania card of all time. Generally, fans disliked the Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzales match, Hulk Hogan's heavy involvement and an overwhelming sense that the WWF were struggling to find a new direction in 1993. It was also one of the only WrestleMania shows to have a set theme. Held in the Caesar's Palace venue in Las Vegas, Nevada, 'Mania IX had a decidedly Roman atmosphere. The WWF went all out with this, even decking out the announcers and other staff in togas for the event. Jim Ross, who was making his debut that night, must have wondered exactly what he had gotten himself into. Preparations for the show began in earnest months earlier. Right before the 30-man Royal Rumble match was set to take place, some actors portraying Julius Caesar and Cleopatra made their way down to the ring. Whipping out a scroll, the mock Caesar then officially invited everyone in attendance to WrestleMania. Talk about overkill, even those more forgiving fans of the early-1990's looked like they couldn't believe how cheesy the whole thing was. Worse yet, Caesar droned on after the pair had taken an age to get into the ring, wasting more time still. This was just painful.
