10 Cringeworthy WWE Moments That Had Fans Blushing
Real gangsters say 'Poopy'...
The anticipation was crazy leading into the 1990 Survivor Series over what lay inside a giant egg.
If that sounds like a bizarre premise with which to try and sell a pro wrestling pay-per-view, it simultaneously speaks volumes of the respect viewers had for the then-WWF's decision-making. What popped out of the egg would ruin that, leaving the creative team and fans alike red faced.
Wearing a turkey outfit and going by the name of the Gobbledy Gooker, Hector Guerrero 'hatched' as Gene Okerlund feigned excitement. Almost instantly, many in attendance started booing. In thousands of homes across the country, it's likely lots of people were left cringing over what they were seeing, regretting shilling out their hard-earned dollars on such nonsense.
There has to be a certain willingness to leave embarrassment at the door when being a wrestling fan, since it pretty much comes with the territory. The industry has after all been stacked full of cringeworthy characters, moments and skits.
Sometimes, these can even be enjoyable, but certainly not in front of people who don't understand wrestling and therefore judge anyone for watching it!
Here are 10 other moments that caused wrestling fans to cringe. Please keep these away from those scathing, non-fan eyes...
10. Mae Young Unleashes Her Prosthetic Puppies
Nobody needs an extensive history lesson over just how much WWE has changed over the years. A quick glance at anything from the 'Attitude Era' should do the trick. However, looking at how the company has traditionally portrayed women is a different story.
In the year 2000, things were a long way from any 'female revolution' focused on actual wrestling.
Enter Mae Young, a pensioner who was willing to do almost anything in order to be part of the show. Spirited and fun-loving, Mae haunted the dreams of everybody who watched the product at the time and her antics at the 2000 Royal Rumble became infamous.
Interrupting a bikini contest that was so typical of the time, Young decided to remove her top and show off her (prosthetic) breasts. Mark Henry was quickly on hand to cover her up, but not quick enough.
Anyone who was watching as a teenager at the time may have already been embarrassed by the idea of scantily clad women on screen anyway, but Mae Young's presence had folks reaching for the TV remote and shaking their heads.
