10 Depressing Wrestling Retirement Matches

5. Goldberg & DeWayne Bruce Vs. Buff Bagwell & Lex Luger (Sin 2001)

The final years of WCW read like a manual of corporate mismanagement. Throw money around, throw ideas around, throw stipulations around, change titles, hire Vince Russo...

In summer 2000, Goldberg worked a weird program with Vince Russo, starting as a heel, then turning kinda face during a worked shoot, before becoming a total face with Russo as his nemesis.

In his role of the month that summer, Russo gave Goldberg an ultimatum - replicate your winning streak from 1997/98 or you're out. This actually worked for a while, as Goldberg began to win matches consistently and build up some momentum.

Then along came a meaningless (even by WCW standards) pay per view and Goldberg lost and was out. During the match, a planted fan in the front row 'maced' Goldberg, allowing him to take steel chair shots from Luger before Bagwell hit him off Luger's shoulders with a Blockbuster for the pin.

In reality, Goldberg needed time off for shoulder surgery, but by the time he recovered, WCW had folded and been absorbed by WWE. He would later have a run in WWE, as well as more recent one-offs, but this car crash of a match represents his WCW retirement.
