10 Disturbing WWE Storylines That Got Way Too Dark

6. Hawk's Drinking Problem

The last few years of Road Warrior Hawk’s life were pretty rough, by all accounts.

He was battling alcoholism by the time he and Animal had returned to the WWF in 1997, and with their shift towards a more adult-oriented product in the Attitude Era, the company decided to place the Legion of Doom in a storyline based on Hawk’s personal problems.

It was a mess from start to finish. Both Hawk and Animal protested the storyline at first, but the WWF wouldn’t relent, and they were forced into performing a number of awkward segments against their better judgement. It started with the team falling apart, as Hawk started appearing for matches drunk or under the influence of harder substances. Hawk soon developed suicidal tendencies, and in an effort to pull the team back together, Droz was recruited as “Puke.”

The conclusion came on a particularly hairy episode of Monday Night Raw. Hawk was at the height of his misery, and climbed to the top of the Titantron with the intention of hurling himself to his death. Puke climbed up to try and talk him down, before eventually pushing the beleaguered tag team legend to his presumed death. It was later revealed that Puke was the one enabling Hawk’s addiction in the first place, but Hawk and Animal both quit shortly afterwards, having finally had enough of the storyline.
