10 Dream Wrestling Matches That Only Happened Once
2. Bryan Danielson vs. Fergal Devitt
It seems unlikely that anyone in WWE’s back office would watch this 2007 match taking place in front of about 50 people in a New York firehall while Daniel Bryan was still on their books, but if they had, they’d surely have run it again.
Working here under their real names, Danielson and Devitt are in their physical prime here and with gas in the tank to work a relentless 20 minutes. It’s a technical masterclass, full of incredibly crisp mat exchanges, flipping in and out of bridges and submissions that look absolutely exhausting.
There’s a great sense of fun, too. The crowd is noticeably tiny but this gives the performers the freedom to do whatever they want, exchanging pins and reversals to the point of parody and mugging it up to the audience. Indeed the crowd do themselves proud, making noise enough to overcome the meagre attendance.
Finally, things end with a Danielson superplex, but this is a great showing for the pair of wrestlers, even if there weren’t too many people there to see it.
