10 DUMB WWE Heel Turns (We Didn't Want To Admit Were GENIUS!)
3. Jake Roberts (1991)
WWF fans didn't know what to make of a heel Jake Roberts. In fairness, bad guy 'Snake' was plonked onto everyone's laps without warning - he turned on The Ultimate Warrior during vignettes prepping Warrior for a match vs. The Undertaker in 1991, and didn't look back. The heel run led to one of WWE's most iconic angles.
The dastardly Roberts let his snake literally chomp down on Randy Savage's arm. That's still shown/talked about today, and wouldn't have been possible without Jake turning. He went from gruff everyman who stood up for the less fortunate to an evil coward who dismissed everything he'd previously preached.
It was a strong switch of style.
Roberts had been one of the best upper-midcard babyfaces in the promotion, but now he was arguably the number one heel on TV. That had to feel good, but heeldom didn't last as long as it should've due to Jake's pesky personal problems and a WWF departure that came out of left field.
