You can't spell "Spirit Squad" without Mikey and Kenny. OK, so that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Y'know what did? The Miz bringing some of Dolph Ziggler's old stablemates back to haunt the one-time Nicky in 2016. Oh yes, the Squad might not have been as nostalgic as The Headbangers, but they felt like ancient history 10 years on from their heyday nonetheless.

WWE didn't need to wheel out the entire gang either. They only needed Mikey and Kenny to sarcastically encourage Dolph to show some spirit before showing that they were only back to sabotage his singles success. Even so, a few fans scratched their heads and wondered why these hyper-enthusiastic dorks were back on TV.

Storytelling, that's why.

The Spirit Squad gave Ziggler his first real breakout gig of any worth on WWE's roster, so it was clever to link back and have Miz play some mind games with his Intercontinental Title foe. This, without going over the top, was one of the best stories SmackDown produced straight after the revived Draft earlier that year. It made for really good television, and it couldn't have happened without Kenny Dykstra or Mike Mondo.
