3. Triple H Beats Randy Orton (Unforgiven 2004)
The corridors of WWE power clearly viewed Randy Orton as a long-term star in the summer of 2004, when it was decided that he was the man who would gazump Brock Lesnar as the company's youngest ever world champion.
He wasn't a natural face (and, in many ways, still isn't) but fans were happy to see just about anyone besides Triple H take to the Monday Night Raw throne, and after clashing with his less-than-impressed leader during his victory coronation, Orton was slowly growing into the hero we all needed.
Only Vince McMahon can really say why, given all of that, he had Triple H resume his reign of terror just one month later with a victory over 'The Legend Killer' at Unforgiven.
Clearly they wanted the belt back around his waist in time for WrestleMania 21, but that was a full six months away. Orton desperately needed a serious title reign to prove that he was no flash in the pan, and his loss appeared to be a way of communicating to the audience that he wasn't yet ready for the big stage.
