10 Electric Wrestling Matches That Saved Pay-Per-Views
9. Dean Malenko vs. Rey Mysterio (WCW Halloween Havoc 1996)
In the mid-90's, WCW was renowned for shining the spotlight on smaller wrestlers. Yes, the main event scene was still crammed full of massive, muscled-up men vying for the attention of fans, but variation was key to ensuring that there was something for everybody when tuning into a WCW Pay-Per-View. Never was that more evident than during the opening match of the promotion's Halloween Havoc event in 1996. Rey Mysterio and Dean Malenko were two world-class performers in their own right individually, but putting them together often resulted in wrestling-related fireworks. Fans were enthused by the action, and there was nothing else that could even come close to matching the bout for the entire duration of the card. Even a main event for the WCW Title pitting Hollywood Hogan opposite 'Macho Man' Randy Savage felt lifeless next to Mysterio vs. Malenko. WCW could have done themselves a favour by running this match over and over again, instead of the average fare on offer following it.
