Saying “goodbye” to one of your favourite wrestlers is never easy, and there’s nothing quite like a retirement speech from a beloved superstar to get the tear ducts going. While Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, and Daniel Bryan have all delivered passionate, memorable farewells over the past decade, none were as jarring as Edge, whose retirement came out of nowhere.

Edge hit the ring midway through what seemed like an average episode of Raw. Fans were told to expect an announcement from him, but while rumours of his imminent retirement swirled throughout the day, nobody wanted to believe it. Thus, when Edge finally announced that if he didn’t walk away from the ring, he’d likely end up in a wheelchair, the news hit like a bomb.

Choking back the tears, Edge explained the extent of his medical problems, stunning everyone in attendance. An 11-time World Champion, he’d long since become one of WWE’s biggest stars, but more importantly, one of their most popular personalities.

Having successfully defended the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII, Edge was going out at the top of the game, but this was scant consolation for his devastating announcement.
