10 Endings That Screwed Great WWE Storylines (And What Should Have Happened)

4. Brawl For All

Bart Gunn Butterbean WrestleMania XV

What Happened: In the summer 1998, 16 of WWE's toughest workers battled it out each week on Raw in a legit shoot fight tournament. Names such as Road Warrior Hawk, The Godfather, JBL and Marc Mero fought it out in tough man contests for the chance to win $100,000. WWF Management assumed that recent signing 'Dr Death' Steve Williams would easily win the tournament and kick off a big money feud with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin.

How It Ended: The former Smoking Gunn knocked out the favored Williams before going on to win the entire tournament with a brutal KO of JBL in the finals. Other than a few on air arguments with Jim Ross, Gunn's only major appearance in the WWF was at the following year's WrestleMania XV against prize fighter Butterbean. In what has been generally accepted as "punishment" for upsetting the apple cart, Gunn was knocked out cold within minutes. Not only did the KO spell the end of Gunn's WWF career, but it also meant that the entire Brawl For All (including all of the injuries and sacrifices of the other participants) was even more of a complete waste of time.

How It Should've Ended: It may sound laughable to pitch Bart Gunn as a top star in the WWF, but keep in mind that during the white hot Attitude Era, almost every wrestler on the roster was making big money as a hugely over WWF Superstar. Charles Wright had gone from the tedious Kama Mustafa to The Godfather, while Glen Jacobs went from Fake Diesel and Isaac Yankem to Kane. Crowds were loud for everyone from D-Lo Brown to Funaki in 1999. It's reasonable to conclude that if he was booked correctly, and presented as a dangerous one punch killer, Bart Gunn could've featured in some decent midcard feuds against the likes of Ken Shamrock, Vader or Owen Hart. A weekly "Open Challenge" (worked fights this time!) could've capitalized on Gunn's Brawl For All notoriety.
