4. Shane Douglas vs. Terry Funk vs. Sabu (Hardcore Heaven 1997)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8dGjXxUw0g ECW was already en route to becoming the breakout promotion that it eventually did but it was the 3-Way Dance pitting Shane Douglas, Sabu and Terry Funk against one another that earned the company the reputation of a must-see wrestling product. That match went one hour and solidified both Douglas and Sabu as stars on a national scale while simultaneously cementing Funk's reputation as one of the most giving legends the industry had ever seen. The fans in Philadelphia rewarded the work of all involved with a thunderous ovation, understanding that they had just witnessed a match of historic consequences. When ECW tried to replicate the classic years later at the Hardcore Heaven 1997 pay-per-view, it was realized fairly quickly just how important the moment and youth of all involved truly was to the original. All three competitors were older, their bodies banged up for years of sacrificing themselves for the growth and development of the ECW brand. The story was not as strong and the aura that had accompanied their first clash was conspicuous in its absence. With so many factors against it, the contest failed miserably to live up to the reputation of the original. In fact, it downright sucked. Hard. Douglas won the ECW Championship for the second time, the only thing right about the entire bout.
