Rumour has it that, following his victory in the 2008 King of the Ring tournament, there were plans to make William Regal WWE Champion and for him to rule over Raw with an iron fist.

Unfortunately, one of Regal's many battles with substance addiction threw these plans out the window, and the Blackpool native never even got a shot at the top prize.

This a shame for many reasons, not least because Regal is one of the best wrestlers to never win a World title of any sorts. Television, Intercontinental, Tag Team, Hardcore, European: all of these belts and more have been in His Lordship's possession, but the big one always eulded him.

His only opportunity to win the WWE title was the March 1st 2001 SmackDown. Regal, who had only recently returned to the promotion, faced off against The Rock for the belt. He jumped The People's Champ before the bell, but quickly found himself in a Sharpshooter before Kurt Angle attacked The Brahma Bull to get the bout thrown out.

Regal's singular WWE Championship match lasted just over three minutes. He deserved a hell of a lot more.
