The number of stories involving Steve Austin working in the midst of a serious injury or illness is as long as his list of championships. The 1998 King of the Ring was no different, with "Stone Cold" still on the mend after battling a staph infection.

The illness caused Austin to be hospitalized for three days prior to the pay-per-view, and it was clear in parts of the match that his energy level wasn't at its most optimum. The First Blood match with Kane for the WWE Championship (in which Kane would have to set himself on fire if he lost, yes really) ended up being a rather enjoyable match, especially as the finish was a bit of a shock to those expecting a long Austin reign.
