The destructive blows to Foley's head and body left him in a greatly compromised state. As mentioned, the fall through the cage's ceiling legitimately knocked him unconscious, and it was several minutes before Foley (God only knows how) could resume working the match.

Because of the damage done, particularly in the form of a concussion, there are parts of the match Foley doesn't recall. He would later make mention of the post-match examination in the trainer's room where he said to a present Undertaker, "Did I use the thumbtacks?", to which a bemused "Dead Man" responded, "Look at your arm, Mick!" Sure enough, a number of tacks remained in Foley's limb.

A further window into Foley's addled state can be found in the Barry Blaustein documentary Beyond the Mat, where Blaustein reveals an answering machine message from Foley in the aftermath of the match. Foley sounds groggy, confused, and speaks incoherently as he tries to string together his thoughts in the message.
