The year 2000 was a financially-lucrative one for WWE, as their popularity continued to soar with The Rock as the face of the promotion. Great wrestling, exciting storylines, and the demonstrated ability to think outside the box (as evidenced by their goofy midcard mayhem) kept WWE fresh, and the fans remained glued to the action.

The 2000 King of the Ring was a beneficiary of the widespread excitement, pulling in 475,000 buys, the most for any event bearing its name. That was up more than ten percent from its 1999 total of 430,000 buys, and a whopping 53 percent from its 1998 total of 310,000 buys.

The next two King of the Rings would show a clear decline in step with WWE's gradual decline in popularity from its Attitude Era apex, but all bubbles burst sometime.
