The King of the Ring PPV took place in Columbus, OH, and there was no day of rest beforehand for either side of the roster. The Raw brand had a Saturday night house show 107 miles southwest in Cincinnati, while SmackDown's roster worked one 135 miles south in Huntington, WV.

On Raw's show, Guerrero took part in a steel cage match, losing to Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam. Van Dam would have to follow up that performance with two matches on the PPV, defeating Chris Jericho in the tournament semis before dropping the final to Lesnar.

Speaking of Jericho, he headlined the blue-brand card, putting over Triple H in a cage match of their own. Come to think of it, the King of the Ring may have been the only show in 2002 in which Jericho didn't lose to Helmsley.
