The year 1988 for WWE was hardly a tumultuous one, but there was still a fair amount of roster turnover. Throughout the year, names like The Rockers, Mr. Perfect, Big Boss Man, Terry Taylor, The Powers of Pain, Bad News Brown, and The Brain Busters would become WWE regulars. That meant there was due to be some house-cleaning.

That much is evident when one realizes that ten entrants in the 1988 Royal Rumble match never took part in any future Rumbles. That list includes wrestlers who were gone before the end of 1988, like The Killer Bees, Don Muraco, Butch Reed, and Junkyard Dog. Harley Race took part at the 1989 Royal Rumble, but in a singles match.

The others, including Hillbilly Jim, Dangerous Danny Davis, Boris Zhukov, and Sam Houston, were relegated deeper into the undercard, none of them playing many significant roles in 1989 and beyond.
