It's usually a show of faith and a badge of respect whenever a wrestler is given a lengthy stay in a Royal Rumble match. If it's an early entrant surviving for a long time, generally it means that wrestler is trusted to help maintain the energy and flow of the match through ring generalship and a keen sense of timing.

It should come as no surprise that Bret "The Hitman" Hart, the 1988 match's number one entrant, was booked to last the longest time. His 25 minutes and 42 seconds of duration, before being eliminated by Don Muraco, seems fairly paltry compared to other performances through the years, but it was still enough to top the 1988 list.
