A great pay-per-view doesn't always lead to a great buyrate, and even lousy pay-per-views can do big numbers (looking at you, WrestleMania 27). The 1992 Royal Rumble, spectacular as it was, was hamstrung by outside circumstances.

In all, the event was good for only 260,000 buys, down mightily from the 440,000 from the 1991 show. Top star Hogan was damaged goods as a result of the hanging steroid cloud and his aforementioned Arsenio Hall interview, and it affected the company in a drastic way.

Buyrates from WrestleMania 7 through the end of 1991 were all down from one year earlier, and each 1992 pay-per-view was down from even the 1991 shows. It was a downward trend that had little to do with the enjoyable in-ring product, and all to do with the tarnished public image of WWE.
