After one hour inside the Rumble match, Flair (with an assist from Hogan) eliminated Justice to capture the WWE Championship. The victory was technically Flair's ninth overall World championship held, with eight NWA/WCW reigns preceding it.

Flair's win made him the second man to hold the NWA and WWE World Championships, following in the footsteps of the previous "Nature Boy", Buddy Rogers. Rogers had won the NWA belt in 1961, and his reign was marred with controversy and unrecognized title changes.

Technically, Flair was the first man to actually win both championships. Rogers was simply declared the first WWE Champion in 1963 upon the belt's creation, though the kayfabe explanation was (wait for it) that Rogers won a tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Sound familiar?
