In the flexible reality of WWE, there are years where Rumble undercarders have no part in the Royal Rumble match, while other times, the Rumble was rounded out with grapplers working twice. Roddy Piper was many things in his unique life, and a trailblazer was most certainly one of them.

As a result of the booking that wrote Bret Hart off of the show, Piper was inserted into the Intercontinental title match. There, he won his first piece of WWE gold by putting The Mountie to sleep, before zapping him with his own cattle prod. It was a feelgood moment that more than made up for Hart's absence.

Piper was already scheduled for the Rumble match, and he would become the first man to compete in the Rumble match and an undercard match in the same night. Piper finished fifth in the Rumble, falling just short of joining Ultimate Warrior as the second dual World/IC Champion.
