First, it was Bret Hart lasting 25:42 in 1988. A year later, Mr. Perfect went 27:58. In 1990, Ted Dibiase survived for 44:47. His high-mark only lasted a year before Rick Martel obliterated it by going 52:17 in 1991. Ric Flair won the WWE Championship at the 1992 Royal Rumble, as well as the duration crown, barely breaching the hour mark by going 1:00:02.

For the sixth straight year, a new mark was set, as Bob Backlund managed to last one hour, one minute, and ten seconds in 1993. In all likelihood, the decision to have somebody break Flair's record was probably a mild eff-you to the outgoing "Nature Boy".

Backlund's record would stand until 2004, when Chris Benoit broke the record by 21 seconds en route to his victory.
