The timing for Royal Rumble matches has always been screwy. Even in years where there were two minute intervals, the powers-that-be would sometimes start the countdown clock well before it would've actually been time, likely as a way to speed things up during a lengthy match.

In 1994, McMahon told the home viewers that each interval would be 90 seconds as a kayfabe Jack Tunney ruling, due to time constraints. For many future Rumbles, that 90 second window would become somewhat standard, getting everybody into the match within 42 minutes, as opposed to 56.

While the quicker intervals do speed up what could be a long slog of a match, it does take away the potential for an early entrant needing to dramatically last one hour in order to win.
