Chris Jericho had just returned to the company in November, and the early returns for his comeback were somewhat lukewarm. A month after resurfacing, Jericho entered into a rivalry with JBL that, according to Jericho, was supposed to stretch all the way to WrestleMania 24 in March.

The lukewarm start to Jericho's "second coming" only continued through a rather mediocre Rumble bout with JBL that pretty much ended the feud. The most glaring part of the middling match was Jericho whiffing on a bulldog attempt.

Both men had only just recently returned to the ring after prolonged inactivity (Jericho had been gone for more than two years, while JBL had been retired for a year-and-a-half). Whatever the excuse for the lackluster match was, it derailed their angle completely.
