With Warrior out of the picture for the foreseeable future, Jake Roberts was transitioned into a feud with Macho Man Randy Savage instead. After Savage and Elizabeth's on-screen wedding, an angle was filmed wherein Roberts and The Undertaker disrupted the wedding reception, after packaging a cobra into a gift box opened by the new (not really) bride.

When Savage lost his retirement bout to Warrior at WrestleMania 7, he had intended to stay retired, while not ruling out a one-off match here and there. Savage is alleged to have had words with McMahon, who wanted (and needed) Savage back to shore up the babyface star power, especially after Warrior was sent home.

Per The Wrestling Observer, McMahon apparently threatened to pull Savage off of his commentary gig on WWE Superstars if he didn't agree to return as a wrestler. Around the time of SummerSlam, Savage had agreed to work the feud with Roberts, but was still insisting that he was retired otherwise.
