Lawler gave up the injury ruse when he snuck into the ring and walloped Bret with one of his crutches. Hart had previously been injured by Lawler in the show-ending attack at the 1993 King of the Ring, and still felt residual pain from The King's apparent carelessness. After Hart was left seeing stars from the stiff crutch to the head, he decided to pay Lawler back.

Per the angle, Lawler was ordered into the match with Bret, and "The Hitman" would initially win with the Sharpshooter. He would then refuse to break the hold until an army of officials pried him off, after precious minutes had passed. The decision would then be reversed to give Lawler the DQ victory.

When Hart applied the hold, he cinched up tight, leaving Lawler crying out in very real pain, as well as tugging at his own hair in agony. The hold was locked on for more than three minutes, giving Hart ample opportunity to hyper-extend Lawler's knees, and fold his lumbar region with a sharp crease. Hart recalls Lawler couldn't even walk when he got back to the locker room.
