Given his near 600-pound frame, there was a risk when it came to Mabel dropping splashes and leg drops onto opponents. Coming into SummerSlam, Kevin Nash was in less-than-optimum shape, owed to the life of a working, touring champion. His lower back in particular was giving him problems. According to Nash, he asked Mabel to take it easy on him.

The match ground to a near-halt in the middle portion, when Mabel dropped Diesel with an awkward uranage. After Diesel kicked out of the pin, Mabel rolled the WWE Champion onto his stomach and performed a standing sitdown splash onto Diesel's lower back, causing Nash a great deal of pain.

According to Nash, he could barely feel his legs in the immediate aftermath, and he verbally let Mabel have it. As commentator Dok "Michael Hayes" Hendrix rasps about Mabel, "sitting down on the job", Nash can be heard yelling, "What the f--k are you doing?! F--k!". Mabel then held Diesel in a loose, threadbare camel clutch for about a minute before Nash regained the strength to continue.
