10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 1997 Facts
8. Dead Crowd Was Attributed To Tailgating
Sometimes a crowd response can make or break a show. SummerSlam 1997 would hardly be classified as a disaster (unless you're telling the story from Austin's perspective), but it's pretty clear that the usually-vocal New York area fans were anything but for much of the night.
Reports from fans attending the show told of a massive tailgate party held outside the arena that Sunday afternoon, where many rowdy revelers took to boozing it up under the hot August sun. The subdued reaction was blamed on quite a few fans inside the building suffering the consequences of too much alcohol and too much heat, combining for a dreadfully sickly feeling.
There were even reports of a few fans falling asleep during the show from those combined effects.
