10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 1997 Facts
7. Mick Foley Was Barely Able To Finish The Cage Match
It just wouldn't be a PPV facts list without bringing up the fact that Mick Foley sustained a near-catastrophic injury, would it? SummerSlam 1997 began with Foley (as Mankind) taking on a soon-to-be-redubbed Triple H inside of the classic blue bar steel cage.
Foley famously won after hitting something vaguely resembling a Superfly Splash, an homage to his portrayal of a star grappler in his teenage home movies. Before that spot, he had to summon the strength to even make it to that point in the match.
The second-most memorable spot of the match saw Mankind crawl to the door to try and escape the cage, only for Chyna to slam the reinforced steel door across Foley's skull. Foley recalls a shooting pain traveling down his shoulder and arm, in addition to the searing agony from the blow to his head.
Foley still had to perform the cage leap, and contends that he didn't even know that he was capable of doing it, following that door spot.
