10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 1999 Facts
8. Chris Jericho Admits That It Was His First Promo That Went Well
Nobody watching will ever forget the August 9, 1999 edition of Raw from Chicago. Chris Jericho had made it to the main stage, following weeks of counting down his arrival, and initial crowd reaction could be best termed as "nuclear". It was an unforgettable Raw moment, though it didn't exactly go as Jericho had intended.
After being trumped up as a would-be main event player that WCW had dropped the ball on, Jericho admits to dropping the ball on his first two WWE promos. Jericho's sour pout at the end of The Rock's retort had made him look weak, and his promo the following night (where he called The Undertaker boring) had the locker room actually thinking Jericho was a disrespectful snot. In his first days with the company, Y2J had amassed a ton of backstage heat.
Jericho's promo on Road Dogg at SummerSlam went off rather well, and Jericho calls it, "one of the few good segments in my early WWE career." He would endure more rough sledding in the ensuing months before finally earning the trust to work consistently near the top of the card.
