The week prior to SummerSlam, Raw is War delivered its usual horsewhipping upon WCW Nitro in the ratings, 6.2 to 2.6. For those of you who don't speak Nielsens, that's tantamount to Jason Voorhees attacking a quadriplegic while armed with a hatchet.

The night after SummerSlam, Raw won, but by a much narrower score of 4.9 to 3.5. Ordinarily, this would be a head-turning development, and it was. However, it was actually good news for WWE: it was the time of year where the US Open tennis tournament would pre-empt Raw. The episode aired at 11 PM EST, while Nitro ran unopposed.

Even then, Raw still beat Nitro handily, despite airing past prime time hours. On Labor Day a week later, with Raw delayed again, they still beat Nitro 4.2 to 3.6. Despite having the upper hand, WCW still didn't have a prayer in the one-sided Monday Night Wars.
