After winning the 2001 King of the Ring tournament, it was clear that WWE had big plans for Edge. Christian's subtle jealousy screamed that a split was forthcoming, and that Edge would probably be the beneficiary of their dissolution. His win over Intercontinental Champion Lance Storm at SummerSlam 2001 was a vital leap up the ladder.

During the match, Christian attempted to run interference and accidentally speared his one-time kayfabe brother. Edge said he'd come up with the spot the previous week, thinking it would be a good way to warm the audience to the impending split. He adds that the agent for the match (who went nameless) told them they could not use a run-in, so Edge went directly to Vince with his plan. The boss concurred it was a good idea, the agent was overruled, and Christian ended up getting involved.
