10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 2008 Facts
9. Mick Foley Was Supposed To Be There, But His Involvement Was Scrapped
In the spring of 2008, Mick Foley joined the SmackDown announce team, and it seemed like a slam dunk: witty, enthusiastic Mick bringing knowledge, humor, and emotional depth to weekly WWE programming. For Foley, however, the role wasn't a fit.
He would later expound upon his displeasure with the job, particularly Vince McMahon's overly-hands-on direction. He came to the conclusion that commentary just wasn't for him, and his relationship with McMahon grew strained once he began donning the headset.
Foley's WWE contract expired September 1, two weeks after SummerSlam, and he told Kevin Dunn that he would be leaving after that date. WWE wrote him out of the show by having Edge attack him on SmackDown weeks before SummerSlam. Originally, WWE wanted Foley to be a part of SummerSlam to commemorate ten years since he and Undertaker's Hell in a Cell match (since Undertaker would be competing in one at SummerSlam), but since he had given his notice, he was told not to come to the pay-per-view.
